The latest statistics show that Australian’s are embracing the sun as more than just the source of a great tan. A massive 2.6 million Australians are now using solar power in their homes.

With solar photovoltaic systems selling at a record low price, one in ten Australians have been seizing the opportunity to install them on their homes.

Why are they selling so low? China has had a massive boom in solar investment causing the cost of solar panels to drop by 80% in the last four years. Where the cost of solar panels deterred home-owners for so long, people are now able to buy them much cheaper.

Professor Tim Flannery, head of the Climate Commission, told AAP:

“A revolution that nobody expected has occurred over the last four years in solar.”

With solar energy increasing in popularity in this country, the Climate Commission predicts it could be providing a third of Australia’s total energy needs by 2050.

As one of the world’s sunniest places it is no surprise that we take solar energy seriously. Since 1941, the CSIRO has played a leading role in the solar industry and has been responsible for a number of technological breakthroughs in this area.

The amount of people now investing in solar power is already helping to reduce Australia’s pollution output. According to Professor Flannery, the expansion of large-scale solar thermal plants could have an even bigger positive impact on our atmosphere.
